Tesco is planning a new development in the Clifford Road area of the town.

If the plans are approved, the supermarket would create 400 jobs and be one of the biggest investors in the town’s history.

Doug Wilson, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said: “We are delighted to share our plans with the people of Stanley and give them the opportunity to comment on the new store proposal.

“The store will offer shoppers a greater choice and, crucially, during these difficult times, Tesco’s investment will be a great boost to the economy in Stanley.”

Vacancies will include full and part-time local jobs, which are said to be among the best rates of pay and benefits package in the retail sector, with flexible working patterns.

Training courses range from basic retail skills through to graduate and management schemes.

The store would have a shop floor of 55,000 square feet on the first floor of the development, with a car park on the ground floor.

There are 500 car parking spaces planned and travelators, or moving pavements, to provide shoppers with easy access between the shop and car park.

The store will be clad in larch and maximise the use of glass to provide as much natural light as possible.

There are also a number of energy efficient measures, including a combined heat and power unit to generate energy and roof ventilators to allow natural air flow.

Details of the plan will go on show at the Lamplight Arts Centre in Stanley on Tuesday, February 9, from 11.30am to 5.30pm, and on Wednesday and Thursday, , 10am to 8pm.
