Mrs Finlow of Stanfield House in Stanley, worked at Pattison Drapers in the town before she married Jack Finlow, who managed Thompson Red Stamp in South Moor.

She worked as nanny to five children of a former landlord of the Imperial Hotel in Stanley – two of whom visited her on Sunday, the morning of her birthday.

Mrs Finlow’s husband died three weeks after the couple marked their diamond wedding in 1992.

Her daughter Jean Piper, 73, said: “My mother and father never went very far without each other.

They spent a lot of time with the family.”

Mrs Finlow also has a son David, 65, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
