Winner and runner-up work only few miles apart

TWO award-winning North Yorkshire food producers, working only a few miles apart, have won more accolades.

Rosebud Preserves of Masham was named best in Yorkshire and Carricks Fish, of nearby Bedale, was runner-up regional champion in the national finals of the Great Taste Awards in London.

Rosebud came top with its sweet onion marmalade; Carrick's was placed second with its oak-smoked kipper fillets.

Elspeth Biltoft, of Rosebud Preserves, said: "We were both thrilled and astounded to be named Yorkshire champion. We're part of a growing movement in Yorkshire that's passionate about producing top quality, seasonal food from local ingredients.

"We're extremely proud of all our products but to be named best in Yorkshire, against some extremely tough competition, is the best news we've had all year."

Chris Revis, of Carricks Fish, said: "We're dedicated to sourcing only the highest quality fish seafoods and we use only traditional and natural methods. We know our products are great, but this really is a prestigious competition and it's wonderful to be reserve champion."

The Great Taste Awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food Retailers, is described as the world's most authoritative food competition.

Last month, companies exhibiting under the Deliciouslyorkshire regional food group's banner gained an impressive 63 awards in the first round of judging.

Karen Carlyle, RFGYH executive director, said: "Rosebud Preserves and Carricks Fish are both worthy winners of this award. Yorkshire has a long tradition of preserve-making, so it's rewarding to know that we're still officially among the best in the land at it.

"Yorkshire also remains what could be described as 'a centre for excellence' for smoked products too, despite a decline in this method elsewhere in the country."
