Spennymoor are hoping to shock Stockport County once again when they visit Edgeley Park this afternoon.

Moors set the tone for their first season in the Vanarama National League North when they surprised the former Football League club with a 1-0 win on the opening day of the season at the Brewery Field courtesy of a David Foley strike, and manager Jason Ainsley would love to repeat that result this afternoon.

“It was a great way to start the season,” he said. “I don’t think anyone could believe at the time that we played them at the same level when just a few years earlier they were in the Football League and we were still in the Northern League.

“Now, we’re going to their stadium, which is fantastic. At the start of the season, this was one of the trips we were looking forward to, considering that Stockport have such a great tradition.

“It will be a great atmosphere, and I know that our supporters will give us plenty of backing just as they always do. We’ll need plenty of help, because this will be a very tough game. However, we’re going there with plenty of optimism, with some good results behind us this season. This will be a yardstick on how far we’ve progressed since the opening day.”

Moors go into the game in fifth place in the table, with five away wins to their credit this season, but Ainsley isn’t thinking about the play offs.

“We’ll take stock of where we are after Christmas. After Stockport, we’ve got FC United and then Blyth twice. We still need to get some points on the board, because the teams near the bottom are starting to win games, look how FC United have moved up the table in recent weeks.”

Midfielder Jamie Chandler has served a one match ban and is restore do the squad, as is central defender Joe Tait after his suspension.

There were some good performances in midweek in the Durham Challenge Cup win at Chester-le-Street, with Andrew Johnson and Mark Anderson forcing themselves into the reckoning.

Stockport are currently eleventh in the table, five points away from the play off spots. Jim Gannon’s side has won five and drawn three of their home games this season.
