A MULTI-million pound project to ease pothole misery for road users has seen 60 kilometres of highways repaired in just six months.

Some 92,000 potholes have been repaired in 70 different schemes across North Yorkshire, at a cost of about £3m.

The programme was jointly funded by the Department for Transport and North Yorkshire County Council and was launched in the spring

The county’s executive member for highways, Cllr Gareth Dadd, described the project as “remarkable.”

He added: “In a relatively short space of time the county council has made tremendous progress in tackling one of the most irritating miseries of modern life.

“There is still much to be done, but we are on with the job and our progress has been rapid.”

The full, programme, designed to put right the ravages of a series of harsh winters, will cost some £50m and take seven years to complete and is in addition to the £25m the council normally spends on highway repairs every year.
