A CHEF who took up jogging to lose weight brought a year of charity challenges to a close with an epic 90-mile, 30-hour run.

Over the last year, David Sawyer, from Bishop Middleham, County Durham, has tackled marathons, half-marathons and trail races across the UK, covering hundreds of miles and raising more than £1,000 for Breast Cancer Care.

But when it came to completing the final two races of his 240-mile charity challenge this weekend, Sedgefield Park Run and the Castles Half-Marathon in Northumberland, the 42-year-old was determined to push himself further.

Mr Sawyer, who has lost six stone since he joined Sedgefield Harriers two years ago, decided to run between the two races, a distance of 90 miles.

Along the way he was supported by members of the running club, which he credits with changing his life for the better.

He said: “This year has been amazing and it’s hard to comprehend that I’ve completed my challenge.

“There have been so many great people behind the scenes who have helped me and kept me motivated, particularly my wonderful wife Colette and many friends from Sedgefield Harriers.

“Joining the club was a life-changing moment for me and my coach, Ean Parsons’, training plan has got me through this year.

“Having so many fellow Harriers running with me through those 30 hours was brilliant and they really helped me get to the end.”
