SHADOW leader of the Commons Angela Eagle said she believes her father is the "greatest living Yorkshireman" as she congratulated her opposite number and Richmond MP William Hague on his swansong address to his party's conference - before insisting it is in fact cricketer Geoffrey Boycott.
Ms Eagle was referring to Prime Minister David Cameron's tribute to former foreign secretary Mr Hague after his final speech in Birmingham, which she said had caused "much consternation".
"Teenagers think it is Louis Tomlinson from One Direction," she told the House. "Guardian readers think it is Alan Bennett, and of course I think it is my dad.
"But deep down we all of us know the truth. He spent years batting on a sticky wicket, he stood strong as his side was collapsing around him and he made a return to the top team after years in exile.
"It is not the Leader of the House - it is Geoff Boycott."
Mr Hague thanked her for drawing attention to Mr Cameron's comment, but added: "Of course the true greatest living Yorkshireman would be too modest to mention the fact, so I'm not going to say anything more about that particular subject."
