A PLASTERER is cementing a new career for himself after landing a work placement with a housing developer.

Ryan Viviers, who is completing a three-year apprenticeship with housing provider Cestria Community Housing, has secured a work placement with developer Galliford Try.

The 21-year-old, from Consett, has won a three-month placement to work on plastering and rendering as the company builds 14 new two-bedroom homes at Primrose Crescent in Bournmoor, near Chester-le-Street.

Mr Viviers, who previously went to Blackfyne Community School, said: “Apprenticeships are really hard to get these days and there is lots of competition for them so I’m delighted to be learning skills that will serve me in later life.

“I like working with my hands rather than academic stuff and its great being able to earn money while you learn.

“I didn’t have a clue about plastering before I started the apprenticeship, but I had a good background in joinery, which I think helped me to secure work.

Martin Warhurst, managing director at Cestria, said: “Ryan has shown enthusiasm and willingness to learn new skills and hopefully this placement will provide him with additional skills and experience that are valuable for working within the construction industry.

Debra Phillips, from Galliford Try Partnerships North, said: “We are delighted to have been able to offer Ryan the opportunity to experience working on a live construction site, putting into practice the theory he has learned at college.

“After some challenging times, there are increasing opportunities within the industry for Ryan and others to forge successful careers.”

Cestria appointed three new apprentices within its building services team last month, including a plumber, joiner and electrician.
