A SPORTS event inspired by the London 2012 Olympics has been hailed a success for the third year running.

Sedgefield Village Games offers free sports, fun and games, to young people from the surrounding area.

The event, which took place on Sunday, at Sedgefield Cricket Club, was attended by more than 100 youngsters, who enjoyed playing a variety of sports.

Chris Lines, of the organising committee, said: “It was all about getting the community to participate and young people excited and interested in sport.

“The village games are largely inspired by the London 2012 Olympics, which succeeded in getting lots of people interested in sport, so we try and keep that going, teaching the children to have healthy bodies and therefore healthy minds”

The day finished with a large game of rounders where children played against adults.

Mr Lines added: “The children obviously won, we may have been slightly lenient with the rules but they can run a lot faster than us. It was a really great, fun family day out.”

The organisation hopes to arrange the event next year. For more information, visit sedgefieldgames.com
