Workers at a care home in Crook, County Durham, are tackling Rosebery Topping after a bus breakdown left them struggling to take their residents on days out. 

Richmond Court, in Willington Care Village cares for the elderly, as well as specialising in dementia, Alzheimer's and learning difficulties. 

But their minibus, used by staff on the activities team to take residents on day trips out and about the North East, broke down about six months ago, meaning many residents have been stuck at home. 

Lesley Howe, lead co-ordinator at Richmond Court, Willington Care Village said: "We've been relying on staff member with business insurance on the cars since the bus went off the road six months ago.

"Its all falling back on staff - we care for a lot of people in wheelchairs, and we'd love to take them out, go to places like the beach, get fish and chips, but we can't manage that. 

"I'm itching to get them out - they've all put together wish lists, like going to the war museum. It's just made life very difficult at the home. 

"Now summer is coming, we really want to get them out."

The walk sets off on May 26, at 11 am from the bottom of Roseberry Topping. 

So far, the group has raised about £500, of the £2,000 total needed to get the minibus fixed up. 

Fifteen members of staff and management, including the head manager and the activities team are involved in the walk, and are asking for those keen to contribute to their bus repairs to get in touch with Richmond Court at Willington Care Village.
