Car collides with train at Redcar Central level crossing

Pictures from the scene show emergency services attending the level crossing at Redcar Central this morning (May 1).

Eyewitnesses at the scene have reported that the driver of the car “seems to be okay.”

One eyewitness said: "If I'd have been a minute earlier, it would have been me on my mobility scooter."

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to a level crossing near Redcar at around  9.25am today (May 1) following reports that a car had been struck by a train.

“Thankfully no injuries have been reported. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.”

A NEAS spokesperson said: “We received a call at 9.23am this morning (Wednesday 1 May) to reports of a road traffic incident near Redcar train station.

"We dispatched a duty officer, a clinical team leader, a crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

"Our services were not required and we were stood down."

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Cleveland Fire Brigade were called on 01/05/2024 at 09.27 to an incident on Station Road in Redcar.

"Three fire engines were in attendance from Redcar, Grangetown and Loftus.

"Two carriage train hit by car. NEAS and Police in attendance. Fire Brigade not required. We stepped down at 10.02.”

A spokesperson for Northern said: "Due to a collision at a level crossing between Middlesbrough and Saltburn the line is blocked.

"Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled."
