A person was taken to hospital after a vehicle left the carriageway and crashed into a tree along the A1(M) in County Durham today.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident on the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) near the Junction 61 at Bowburn at about noon.

One lane of the carriageway was closed while paramedics and police officers attended the scene, causing long tailbacks to traffic.

The person was treated at the scene, before being taken to hospital.

National Highways described it as a "medical incident", but it is still not clear why the vehicle left the road.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police were called shortly after 12pm today following reports of a collision on the A1(M) near J61 at Bowburn.
