One of the biggest zombie films series of all time is set to get a brand new instalment next year - and it's going to be filmed right here in the North East.

Fans of the acclaimed film 28 Days Later are in for a treat as a third film in the series, 28 Years Later, is set to be released on June 20, 2025.

However, what's more exciting is that it's set to be filmed in the North East according to IMDb.

Its filming locations so far have been listed as Newcastle Upon Tyne, Holy Island and Kielder Forest in Hexham.

As of now, filming dates and production remain unknown but the cast has been announced and includes Killing Eve star Jodie Comer and James Bond hopeful Aaron Taylor Johnson.

Directed by Danny Boyle, the latest film went into development in January and now there is just over a year until it's expected to hit cinema screens.

Plot details are under wraps, but it is understood to have been co-written by Alex Garland.

The series first began in 2002 - where a fresh-faced Cillian Murphy depicted a London resident who woke up from a coma in a post-apocalyptic Britain in St Thomas Hospital.

Fighting off zombies, Murphy along with other survivors make their way to Manchester in an effort to be saved. Murphy is also involved in the forthcoming movie - not as an actor but as an executive producer.

The original film earned an impressive £65 million at the box office and preceded the success of zombie films and TV shows including The Walking Dead, World War Z and Zombieland.

It is regularly cited in lists of the greatest zombie movies of all time and was followed five years later by a sequel, 28 Weeks Later - again to favourable reviews.
